How often do you take time for yourself? Do you know if you enjoy what you do daily or are you doing it merely out of habit? All we’ve got is our mind and body. The body through which we consume food , which is also an aid for us to accomplish any physical tasks, and the mind through which we perceive and view everything. The mind is also what governs our body. Though they are crucial for our existence we often pay too little or no attention to them.
Our perception of reality is far from the real reality which is the Now, the present moment. Everything else that we perceive to be real is our own creation that we’ve built from our past memories. We allow ourselves to be absorbed by the illusion of reality that we narrate in our minds and we even go to the extent of visualising it in our mind and believing it to be true. This is not entirely a bad thing if those beliefs are of good nature, positive, and in some way benefitting your life but most of us tend to unconsciously always think of things that are negative or of reason for concern and worry.
When we are not present, if we are thinking of thoughts that are negative and we allow it to inflict an emotion in us such as anger, frustration, or worry, we trigger thousands of neurons in our brain that will form a neural network. The more repetitively we do this where we react in similar ways to similar thoughts, we are hard wiring our brain to make this a habit as the brain learns to trigger the same neurons every time. Next time you feel angry or frustrated, if you take a second to take a look at where this is coming from and why you are reacting the way you do, you might be surprised to find out that it might be simply out of habit or due to a subconscious belief you’ve formed that you might not even be aware of!
When it comes to your family there is a high chance that no matter how old you are, or how the circumstances have changed, you still react similarly to how you did when you were a kid! You might sometimes not want to even react this way anymore but you might find yourself going back to the same old way of reacting every time you are triggered, and this might be a harder pattern to break. On the bright side, the same way that we make these reactions a habit with negative thoughts and emotions, it works the same when it comes to our positive thoughts and emotions. If we can’t be conscious/present throughout the day, let’s try to at least practice gratitude taking a few minutes of the day where we shift our mind to consciously think positively. By doing this we are now firing neurons in our brain that would form a neural network that will learn to hardwire, better, positively attributing habits in to our lives.
As you go through the day, whenever you catch yourself thinking negatively, worrying or feeling stressed, know that you always have the power to shift your thought process in that moment and not allow those neurons to wire together. This simple act of changing your thoughts would be your initial step in starting to break the patterns that you’ve cultivated in your mind over time. As you continue this, you can also eventually start to reinforce new patterns in your mind making them new habits in your life. Habits that you do desire to be a part of your life, and you are aware of!
How to do this? Simply change your thoughts when you find yourself thinking undesirable thoughts and make a practice of focusing more attention to the things you do want in your life as opposed to what you don’t want in your life. Think, talk and visualise in your mind everything you do want. Where your mind goes, energy goes, and you are teaching your brain to react in ways that are desirable for you. If you give this a try, you maybe surprised to find how certain things you worried about before, fix itself when you remove your attention and the energy from them!
